Augustinian Bishops
According to the Constitutions, friars who are called to serve the greater Church as bishops—following the example of Saint Augustine himself—remain members of the Order. (Const. 257)
The status and responsibilities of Augustinian bishops are described as follows:
-
Observance of the Rule: They are still obliged to observe the spirit and the prescriptions of the Rule and the Constitutions, provided these are compatible with their apostolic service as bishops.
-
Rights and Privileges: They continue to enjoy the rights and privileges afforded to members of the Order and their specific circumscription.
-
Active Voice: Augustinian bishops are granted the right of active voice (the right to vote) within the Order under specific conditions: they must have retired from their office and returned to live in a religious house.
Historical Precedent: The Constitutions note that Saint Augustine lived out the ideal of the "servants of God" throughout his various roles as a layman, priest, and finally as a bishop.
