Ordinary General Chapter of the Order. Rome 2025

Updated: Jul 2

The Ordinary General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine will be held in Rome from September 1-18, 2025.

Several dozen friars, coming from the 43 circumscriptions in which the Order is organized, will participate in a Chapter from which a new General Government will emerge.

Besides the work of evaluation of the current six-year term and the development of a road map to be followed during the next mandate, the election of the Prior General and his Council will take place, as well as the appointment of the Secretary General and the Bursar General.

The current Father General, Alejandro Moral Antón, is completing his second term. Since our Constitutions stipulate that a major superior can only serve two consecutive terms, the current Prior General is not eligible for re-election and it will be necessary for the Augustinian friars to determine who will guide and watch over the future of the Order at the next Chapter in September.

“Seeking the common good of the Order”

"The General Chapter, which is convoked "for the purpose of promoting the common welfare of all the friars," is the chief event in the life of the Order, for it should offer witness to the Augustinian spirit and demonstrate clearly the unity of minds and hearts. Therefore, conscious of their serious responsibility, all chapter members should seek the common good of the Order".

In the leitmotif that will inspire the Chapter of September 2025, the motto of the Jubilee Year has been integrated: “Peregrinantes in spem”, on which Father Alejandro has insisted on so many occasions; a motto that will convey and illuminate this beautiful moment of evaluation, planning and decision.

The technical commission for the revision of the Constitutions is already “at work”.

During the last days of March, specifically the 24th and 25th of last month, the technical commission created ad hoc for the revision of the Constitutions in preparation for the Chapter met at the General Curia of the Order in Rome with the objective of dealing with some themes of juridical character related to constitutional regulations.

Joseph L. Farrell, Vicar General and Councilor for North America; Pasquale di Lernia, Secretary General of the Order; Miguel Angel Martin Juarez (SAH); Clement Nandou (CON); Richie Mercado (CHI); Jonas M. Mejares (CAE) and Carlos Alonso Garcia (SAH).

It is important to remember that this commission does not have the capacity to make decisions but its competence is limited to making recommendations to the Prior General and his Council for the preparation of opportune working documents that will serve as a guide for the next Ordinary General Chapter.
