The Vicar General
Office of the Vicar General
Within the governance of the Order of Saint Augustine, the Vicar General plays a vital role in supporting the leadership and mission of the Order throughout the world. Entrusted with significant responsibility, the Vicar General serves as the principal collaborator of the Prior General, ensuring continuity, stability, and faithful administration within the Augustinian family.

A Trusted Collaborator of the Prior General
The Vicar General is expected to possess the same qualities required of the Prior General: wisdom, prudence, pastoral sensitivity, and a deep commitment to the Augustinian charism. His primary responsibility is to act in place of the Prior General whenever the latter is absent from the General Curia or impeded in the exercise of his office. In such circumstances, the Vicar General represents the Order in the name of the Prior General, exercising the faculties that have been entrusted to him.

In carrying out these responsibilities, the Vicar General always acts in harmony with the mind and will of the Prior General. Communication and transparency are essential aspects of this role: the Vicar General keeps the Prior General informed about matters already undertaken or those that require attention for the good of the Order.

The relationship between the Prior General and the Vicar General is founded on mutual trust. The Prior General relies on the Vicar General as a close collaborator, frequently seeking his counsel and assistance in the governance of the Order. In return, the Vicar General is expected to demonstrate the highest degree of loyalty and dedication.
This relationship ensures that the Prior General, often burdened with the many responsibilities of guiding an international religious order, can confidently depend on the conscientious support of the Vicar General.

Serving the Augustinian Mission
Through this role of service and collaboration, the Vicar General contributes to the unity and vitality of the Augustinian family worldwide. By assisting the Prior General and ensuring stable leadership when required, he helps the Order remain faithful to its mission of community life, pastoral ministry, education, and service to the Church and the world in the spirit of Augustine of Hippo.
