During the month of March, Father Ian Wilson, Assistant General for Northern Europe, accompanied the Augustinians of the Netherlands during their most recent provincial assembly.
Held once a year, the friars' discussions focused on the nature of what it means to belong to the Order of Saint Augustine, the current particularities of their jurisdiction, and the ongoing efforts to better care for elderly friars and strengthen the pastoral work in the parish in which they collaborate.
In a country deeply marked by agnosticism and atheism—leading Europe with 56% of the population identifying as non-believers—the Order's evangelizing mission continues to be shaped by the challenges experienced over the past 70 years in maintaining a Catholic presence in the Netherlands.
This marked Father Wilson’s third visit to the Dutch province, following a trip last April alongside the Prior General and another undertaken in June 2024.“These have been days of reflection on how to involve young people more actively. In Utrecht, being a university city, particularly meaningful work is being carried out within the parish. Despite the challenges, our friars display great enthusiasm.”
Father Zweers, a member of the Augustinian community in the Netherlands and a close companion to the Assistant General during his visits, spoke about the mission undertaken in the country in these terms:“We have many opportunities to give new momentum to the city, to the nation, and to reach out to new people who may feel called to religious life. The first positive and hopeful signs for the next generation are already emerging…”
The Work of the Augustinians in Vienna:
Following the assembly, Father Wilson set off for Vienna, Austria.
There, together with Fathers Matthias, Dominic, and Nikolaus, he reflected on their future and on possible ways to strengthen their presence in the country.
“The three friars are deeply engaged in pastoral work in Vienna and the surrounding areas, which includes involvement in schools. Every Sunday, at the Augustinerkirche, a beautiful Mass is celebrated with choirs and orchestras, drawing a large and devoted congregation.”
At present, the jurisdiction is closely accompanying the formation and discernment process of one of its young members, who is currently completing his novitiate in Maria Eich, Germany.
“There are hopeful signs that the Augustinian presence in Vienna may continue to grow. The friars here maintain constant contact with the youth.”
