Twelve years ago, under challenging circumstances, the Province of Brazil began a journey. Also twelve years ago, in 2013, the Prior General, Father Alejandro Moral, started his service at the head of the Order of Saint Augustine.
From August 4 to 9, Father Alejandro Moral presided over his last chapter as Prior General in the Province of Brazil.
“It was a beautiful and peaceful gathering, where we were able to discuss the current needs of the Province,” noted the Prior General.

During those days of dialogue among the 40 friars who participated (the Province consists of 47 Augustinian friars with solemn vows, three with simple vows, and one novice currently in Peru), the current Provincial, Father Mauricio Manoso Rocha, was confirmed in his role. His council was approved, with part of his former team remaining in place. In addition, a new Secretary, Treasurer, and representative for Justice and Peace at OALA (the Organization of Augustinians of Latin America) were appointed.
“One of the issues addressed was the need for greater economic centralization and a change in the style of governance,” explained Father Alexander Lam, Assistant General for Latin America.
“They are refining their approach to vocation ministry and exploring possible changes in the formation houses. They are also considering how, as their numbers grow, they can strengthen their provincial finances by promoting new initiatives that will help them develop and sustain themselves as an institution. They are approaching all this with great joy and enthusiasm. They are doing very good work in the area of vocations and are pleased with the progress of the new parish of Saint Augustine, opened in the northeast.”
At present, most of the communities have at least four brothers.“This is something very positive, creating a wonderful fraternal spirit.”
