Office of the Postulator General

The Postulator General is a specialized official of the general curia responsible for the postulation and promotion of the causes of beatification and canonization within the Order.

Core Responsibilities

According to the Constitutions, the Postulator General has several key duties regarding the Order's spiritual legacy:

  • Managing Causes: They handle the causes of beatification for the "servants of God" and the canonization of the "blessed of the Order". This involves working with both local Ordinaries and the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in accordance with established ecclesiastical norms.

  • Advancing New Causes: The Postulator General is expected to use suitable means to ensure new causes are introduced and that those already begun are advanced.

  • Promoting Veneration: They are tasked with prudently promoting the veneration of the saints and blessed of the Order.

  • Receiving Reports of Holiness: Notifications regarding any members of the Order who have died with a reputation for holiness should be communicated to the Postulator General.

Appointment and Administration

  • Appointment: The Postulator General is appointed by the Prior General with the consent of his Council. This position is typically confirmed or updated during the Ordinary General Chapter.

  • Confidentiality: Like all officials of the curia, they are obliged to maintain faithful silence regarding secret matters learned through their office.

  • Accountability: They must render an account of their administration to the Prior General and his Council at least once a year.

Although they do not have a vote in General Council sessions, the Prior General and Council are directed to respect their opinion as an expert in their specific area of responsibility.
